Frodo Hates Zelda

Lately some of you have expressed concern over the fact that we here at GayGamer have perhaps shown some favoritism concerning the Wii vs. the PS3. I am sure the PS3 has its merits, but the fact remains that no matter how you look at it, the PS3 launch was pretty botched. It’s also easy to jump on the Sony hate train when we’re all too broke to afford one. But, in the interest of fairness I would like to give the Wii its fair share of bad press:
Frodo over at The Weekly Geek, a self admitted Nintendo Fanboy, has published a review concerning his bitter disappointment in Zelda: Twilight Princess.
I want you all to know that I am basically the biggest Nintendo fanboy there is. I am a Nintendo apologist and I freely admit that. I also want you to know that so far I do not like the Wii and more specifically, I think Zelda Twilight Princess sucks. There, I said it. Phew. Feels goooooood to say it.
I have not been able to play far enough into the game yet to make an informed opinion, but I have to say, my initial reaction was a little less than favorable. Your opinions on the game may differ from Frodo’s or mine, but at the same time, a review is only one man/woman’s opinion. Decide for yourself, but if you want to see the new Zelda through the eyes of a dyed in the wool Nintendo fan, I encourage you to go check out Frodo’s review. I think it’s quite succinct.
Why Zelda: Twilight Princess Sucks. [The Weekly Geek]

I will at the very least say this. Wind Waker was so perfect, with such a sense of style, that it’s gonna be hard to top. It’s easily in my top 5 games of all time.
That said, This Zelda is still pretty impressive. The horseback fighting especially. I will reserve final judgement for when I complete the game (maybe I’ll write a whole review) but so far it’s still worth the price, and that’s what really matters.
BTW, that screenshot is from the Gamecube version of TP, I know this because he is holding his sword in his left hand.
I’ve only progressed through three dungeons thus far, and my main complaint is that the game is far too linear. I hope that the world opens-up a bit.. and soon.
A second complaint? MIDI. It’s 2006. Come on, Nintendo..
(And for the record, I probably rival this guy in terms of Nintendo fanboyism.)
I agree with this guy almost to every gripe and complaint.
I have not owned this game, but I was given about a 10 hour period to play around with it before it released and I didn’t walk away enthralled. It doesn’t suck, but it definitely wasn’t as great as I was expecting. As I’ve said other places, I agree very much with the score that Gamespot gave Zelda because the game is far far far from perfect.
8.8 is still a good score, it just doesn’t mean the game was absolutely phenomenal.
I agree with Gamespot too. The game far from sucks but yeah they could have done better. I thought the graphics especially were terrible for a Zelda game much less a Nintendo game. I literally can’t make out what things are sometimes.
I’ve seen some screenshots, and Frodo is dead on in his remark that the characters are ugly. Oh so ugly. Not Link, but some of the townspeople he interacts with have definitely all been swiming in the same gene pool. Shudder
Thus far I’ve resisted co-opting my friend’s Wii to plaqy Zelda myself, simply because I want to wait for the Gamecube version. If they’d allowed you to select Gamecube controls for the Wii version I’d be all over it, but thus far, much as I enjoy the Wii control setup, I still can’t fathom playing a Zelda game like that.
As for the game being “ugly”, I’m not quite sure which Zelda: Twilight Princess you people are referring to. Every screenshot and video of the game I’ve seen looks stunning, visually.
I’m with Shin Gallon – what’s with the “no better than N64 graphics”? I put the old N64 version on the other day via my Gamecube disk, and the difference is huge – clothing, textures, the way the light shines on things in the “wolf view”. What’s with the “Oh, I hate the graphics” stuff – it’s gorgeous!
I’m third-ing the comments about the graphics. So far, I’m loving it. Everything has been quite beautiful and the Twilight Realm is just plain creepy.
I remember back when Wind Waker came out, everyone was ticked because it looked too bright and too cartoony. Now people are pissed that its too dull and not cartoony.
I’m sure this guy’s as much a dyed in the wool Nintendo fan as Joe Lieberman is a dyed in the wool Democrat.
Then you compare this game to the likes of other Gamecube games and it doesn’t even hold a candle to them.
The graphics are a big letdown for a Gamecube game.
You homos are as crazy as you are gay. The game/story/graphics are great.
I’m actually halfway tempted to ask if anyone’s using component cables for their setup as opposed to the composite ones shipped with the system. Makes a HUGE difference.
I have the component cables. After playing the first two hours with 480i (accidentally – I hadn’t switched the settings on the Wii’s ‘Resolution’ menu), I switched to component and found that there was a notable difference. Textures were crisper, jaggies were less distracting,etc etc.
The cables were well worth it. Just an FYI.
When I reviewed it was both with component and composite cables (We switched about an hour or two in so I could see the difference). Component is a huge improvement over composite, but it still doesn’t make this game pretty or even passing (graphically) to me.
Well, I think the game looks terrific. The soft lighting blur was overplayed for a while, but since TP was delayed so much, it actually doen’t bug now. :-) I also don’t have any issues with the controls. In fact, I think swiping the Wiimote to control the sword adds a wonderfully viceral quality to the gameplay. On the other hand, I totally feel like it’s a retread of every single other Zelda game. It’s always some boy in a town who is called upon for this grand destiny to save Hyrule and Princess Zelda, just like that “legendary hero in the green tunic.” I’d almost rather it be the same Link in different adventures. Then maybe it wouldn’t feel so repetitive…
Okay, heres my thoughts.
1) Controls: Occasionally unresponsive, and I cant aim steady because of…things
2)Very linear
3: Fun. Plain and simple. It’s addicting, and its fun. The graphics dont matter, the controls dont matter, the plot nor linearity matters, just as long as the game is fun. That IS what games are about are they not?
Wow, lots of great comments on my review, thanks! Lessee:
@kitsune
I have a zelda tattoo on my wrist. I don’t see Lieberman with any donkey tats.
@John Hummel
The polygon count is abysmally low. The textures for the grass and hyrule field areas is so very very poor it does look like n64 graphics on occasion. I am mainly talking big areas of space, not small details and textures. Though the textures are surprisingly low res at times.
@Muddbstrd
I have always said that Wind Waker was great and people were retarded for saying that it was too “kiddy”. Wind Waker was in the spirit of the first Zelda games, they have never been “mature” before Ocarina of Time. It just worked and I loved it.
Also, I’d get the component cables if i could afford a TV that actually supported that input.
