Capcom Adresses New Tiny Text Issue

BEFORE

AFTER

After the headache-inducing tiny text issue in Dead Rising, 360 owners with SD TVs were wondering if they would ever be able to read the text in Capcom games without buying a new TV. While Capcom told us “no dice” with the Dead Rising issue, it seems they have actually listened to testers’ complaints about the same issue in the upcoming Lost Planet.

Beta testers of the “Elimination” multiplayer mode were hauling out the magnifying glasses so they could see what kind of scores they were ranking and promptly informed Capcom of the problem. Capcom responded immediately:

Lost Planet will automatically detect if you are playing on an SDTV and change the score display settings for this mode automatically. For the benefit of both you and your readers, we’ve included before and after shots of the text adjustment. In screenshot “LP – SD BEFORE”, you see how the text would have appeared before we implemented the change. In screen “LP – SD FINAL”, you can clearly see how the rankings text has been greatly enhanced, making it much easier for players to quickly determine scores and standing during a match.

While I applaud Capcom for addressing the issue so quickly, I have to wonder why they didn’t just take care of it during the development. Especially since they knew this had already been an issue in the past.

I think that a lot of developers are living in a high-tech bubble where everyone they know has an HDTV, so they assume all their customers do as well. The fact that the HD rollout is going so poorly that they had to push off the end of analog TV (which will generate many billions of license revenue for the government when they auction off the spectrum) by 3 years doesn’t get through to them.

I personally know one (1) person who owns an HDTV, and he bought it as part of an expansion of his house for which he took out a second mortgage. Regular people with kids and piles of bills, who make up about 80% of the population, just don’t own them. But some regular people own Xbox 360’s, which is where the problem lies.

However, there are LOTS of people who will be getting an HDTV between now and January, thanks to some aggressive price cuts and lots of random Chinese manufacturers joining the market this year, so the economics of scale might make it possible to get a 27” LCD HDTV (maybe only 720p, but that’s all the networks do anyway) for 300 bucks by next xmas. That will trigger mass-market adoption, if it happens.

I know I’ll have trouble resisting a 32” for $500 or 37” for $700. My partner has his heart set on a 42”, which should be a grand by this time next year, but looking at how our old 25” set dominates our small living room, I think 37” is as big as we’ll go.

heh – australia has had the analogue tv switch off put back to 2012 (at the earliest)..

it’s strange since we’re such early adopters with new technology – but there is no perceived benefit here for digital tv with the mass market!

Only numbers I know is that Japan itself has over 60% of the population with HDTV. While the North America lands probably have less then 20%.

Look, I wish everyone would stop talking about the Tiny text problem. Tiny has no problem at all with text, OK? I can even read cursive script, thanks to some intense 1-on-1 tutoring from Mikey. So just cut it out with the illiteracy interventions, y’all. Tiny can read.
