Playstation And Libraries: A Winning Combination?

Sorry, folks, I couldn’t find a picture of a the library in question, so I figured the Library of Congress looked cool enough to be an adequate substitute

Ever heard of Papamoa, New Zealand? Don’t worry, neither had I until I read an article about it today. I’ve even been to NZ and traveled all over the North Island, where it’s located within a couple of hours of Auckland.
Anyway, I digress. Papamoa has begun the process of installing Playstation units into its city libraries, beginning with its newest facility. Personally, I think this is a great idea, since it serves two different functions of making cool places to hang out for kids as well as providing adult supervision for what games are being played: somehow, I don’t imagine the librarians letting Little Timmy playing Grand Theft Auto or Manhunt on the machines.
To me, it also means that Papamoa is a city which doesn’t dismiss its teen population, as shown by Library Team Leader Jo Thomas’s rationale behind this decision:
“There was a lot of public consultation during the library’s designing process … the teenagers themselves told us they wanted all types of technology … that’s been taken into account.”
Way to go, Jo. I suggest you come to America and get some of our libraries to be as rockin’ as yours.
Bay mum’s anger: library for books, not games
