Happy With Sadness
Here’s a really amazing video for an upcoming Wii game called Sadness. There really isn’t a whole lot of information out about it right now, but this trailer looks incredible. Done in an interesting style I’ll dub “Victorian Noir”, you seem to guide a killer Gibson Girl on a rampage, using the Wii controller to throw, jab and slash your way through a black and white spooky environment. Interestingly, it seems that the game is video captured, although this might just be for the trailer. So sit back and enjoy Sadness.
Thanks to Clint for the tip!

Very cool looking clip! hopefully it’s not going to be a FMV game, those things are horrible.

Wait… is that an adventure game? I saw puzzle solving.
I don’t care whatcha call it…as long as it’s not too much like Dragon’s Lair, I’m psyched. Can’t wait to use the wiimote to cinch up my whalebone corset and cover the ankles of my grand piano!
Sweet. Now I can pull that victorian dress out of my closet for extra immersion. ;)
I think that this clip is more of an artist rendering to emphasize the point that the player had “become” the lead character as she was so immersed in it. I don’t think that you’ll find the actual game uses video capture. That technology is extremely antiquated and limited as we all know from Bluth’s games (albeit they were great at the time) and future Sega iterations like Time Traveler. (Was it called Time traveler? It was the holographic one.) They don’t play smoothly and end up being a much more frustrating experience than any game should be.
I think this is simply, as Fruit coined, a “Victorian Noir” styled trailer that is meant to convey the sort of mood and style they are expecting to show from the game.
I particularly like the seductive Wiimote button press at the end that crossfades into the player as the female character opening an umbrella.
Nothing says “classy lady” like strolling away twirling your parasol after you’ve killed a few people. Oh, and with the Wiimote, in theory, you COULD twirl your parasol!
I smell bullshot. Cute film school project though.

IGN has more on Sadness:
“From the upstart Cracow, Poland development team of NIBRIS, Sadness is a gothic horror adventure game with survival horror elements. The game plans to make players confront their fears with only what they can grab up out of their environment to protect them.”

Sorry, I don’t know how to make clickies.

Yeah, this trailer came out back in April and at the time, the developer said it was a concept piece to attract a publisher. As far as I know, they found a publisher for this and for the DS version of “Raid over the River” (or more accurately translated from the Polish, “Please Don’t Sue Us, Activision”.)
But there’s been no news out of Nibris since E3…. hopefully they’re just too busy developing to do hype.
