Irreversible(2002)

A gay club named “Rectum” and a cruel act with a fire extinguisher. 10 minutes of forced sodomy on the French lady from the last two Matrix films and Mary Magdalene from “Passion of the Christ”. A video-release ban in New Zealand. I am of course discussing the finer points of the 2002 French release “Irreversible”, a film that confused, angered, and probably aroused a percentage of the audience that viewed it. A film the requires only the briefest of discussions, due to the powerful nature of it’s content. It won the Bronze Horse at the Stockholm Film Festival and was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes, and was one of the most controversial films of 2002. It uses a reverse chronology similar to “Memento” and the South Korean “Peppermint Candy”, not to mention some of the most disorienting camera work to ever hit 16mm widescreen film. The words “dizzying filth” are tossed about, but this film is very moving if one can exhaust themselves in watching it. The barks of sexual exploitation are falsely accused when one considers the film at it’s singular, revolting whole of natural art and confusion. A stark tale of revenge and aftermath- “Irreversible”
