GayGamer Calls Shenanigans On Joystiq!

With a fervor rarely seen since the introduction of the Cabbage Patch Doll, thousands upon thousands of geeks (and Alexander) waited, sweaty, breathing heavy with their fingers poised over the reload button, at 12:01 A.M. waiting for the promised land of new next-gen big news as reported by Joystiq.
The magic hour came and went only to be given the news that “IBM announced that their Broadway chip custom-designed for Nintendo’s Wii console has been shipping to Nintendo since July.”
Alexander was rightfully angered and we heard his anguished cries ring throughout GG Castle along with the collective cries of everyone who stayed up waiting when they could have been playing their favorite game. And then, with the power of an atomic bomb, a collective “MEH” rose into the air and floated off into the ether.
Joystiq even published an apology post for whipping everyone up into a frenzy, but I’m sorry that just doesn’t cut it. Shame on you, Joystiq! We demand satisfaction! Robert Summa must give us full frontal, no more of this back to the camera bullsh*t. The payment for being a Wii tease is having your goods splashed all over the internet and a big red “T” branded into your chest. The irons are already hot…

This is precisely one of the reasons I’ve come to GayGamer.net from Joystiq. As much as I have loved them, their definition of “newsworthy story” has apparently diminished as their popularity has grown. Sadly, I’ve been considering making some sort of statement with my Joystiq tee, even if it’s a desperate cry for their attention to the fact they are losing the very audience that boosted them to where they are today, wherever in hell that is.
If you look at the breakdown of contributers and their activity, Robert Summa (who isn’t all that hot, you’re just eager to bust it) has made 50% more posts in less time than the next active contributer at Joystiq. I think someone just enjoys their job a little too much and needs to review what exactly is newsworthy.
Recapping or, to be nice, “clarifying” a story that’s two months old while billing it as a major console announcement? That’s more weak than my queer ass in fourth grade gym class.
Shenanigans?! I’ll go get my broom!
I agree with what DCFC Fan said above me. Alot of what they do and report on now is hardly things that many deem important or remotely newsworthy.
I come to GayGamer.net for my newsy news first thing! :3
Ok the guy had one crappy post, even we gave him shit about it :) Unfortunately he was fired from Joystiq for it, can you believe that? We offered him a spot on Dtoid and he accepted, so you can now read him here :)
Ok, sure, it was lame, and it upset people. But it was no reason to straight-out fire Rob. That’s just nasty, and thats the reason I may well leave Joystiq.
What happened to second chances?
I absolutely agree with you. When I wrote this post, I had no idea that he had been fired. I was really just haveing a bit of fun..but I think that firing him was a bit in the extreme. Reading Robert’s Destructoid post, at least he seems happy to be in a more unrestrained environment. We (obviously) like Robert very much here at GG and it was a shame what happened to him. I am thrilled though, to now be writing along side him at Destructoid.
I leave the country and everything goes to pot. Robbie can always come work as a gogo boy at Chez Dancer.
I can understand why he was fired. I honestly think he writes a lot of fluff posts and am not part of his fan club, but this was rough.
My theory is the fact that Joystiq’s credibility was on the line here and in question, and that’s all that sets them apart from other sites. For whatever reason, this story took off like wildfire and Joystiq had to take some sort of “corrective action”. My theory is they didn’t want to let him go, but they had to in order to save some credibility. Harsh punishment sends the message “this is absolutely not acceptable” and helps to restore their tarnished image.
So in summary, not a fan and understand why he was let go, but I still feel for him. Hopefully he can learn from this and move forward with Destructoid. Good luck, Summa!
