Top 20 Gayest Video Game Characters - #9

9. Ash – Bare Knuckle 3/Streets of Rage 3

In 1994 Sega of America would bring Japans’ Bare Knuckle 3 stateside and changed the name to Streets of Rage 3. Among the many other changes that Sega felt they needed to make for Streets of Rage 3 to succeed in the US was the removal of a Boss named Ash. It was pretty obvious this guy was gay from his leather camisole, purple leather daddy hat, spiked bracelets, bizarre green tights/hose, motorcycle boots and a large necklace that inexplicably has a female symbol on it.

Sega removed him from the US edition of the game, although remarkably he remained available as a playable character with the help of the Game Genie. And while this is notably the first time a gay character would be available to use as a playable fighter, he was still, as many gays were at the time, safely hidden away.

Where was Ash supposed to be, and who replaced him in the US version? Also, what other changes were made to the US version?
